Greener Impact
by Samantha Butwill

Being passionate about sustainability and a member of Litchfield High School's Environmental Club, Greener Impact, I wanted to take action to allow our school to function in a more environmentally sustainable way. Growing up observing my family, my friend's families and my summer camp compost on a daily basis, I was inspired to engineer a composting system for our school. The process for composting at Litchfield was implemented in October of 2010. Currently, organic food scraps are collected in the cafeteria's kitchen, the teacher's room, and the culinary room. Mr. John Whalen has graciously offered to transport these food scraps from their respective collection locations to the outdoor bins constructed by Mr. Neil English’s, TSA club, and construction classes. The horticulture class plans to utilize the compost to enrich their soil. This project would not have been possible without the overwhelming support from members of the LHS community.
