Dear RSD6 Community,

In June, the Connecticut General Assembly approved a law that towns would forfeit revenue if their schools continue to use “any name, symbol or image that depicts, refers to or is associated with a state or federally recognized Native American tribe or a Native American individual, custom or tradition” after July 1, 2022.

Currently, WAMOGO has three images in its gymnasium. Two of these images are located at the end of the basketball court.  The other image is a painting that has been on the wall since the 1980s.  It is important to note the use of the term “Warrior” does not violate the law.

At its regular meeting on August 16, 2021, the RSD6 Board of Education will discuss and potentially take action on retiring these images to be in compliance with the legislation.

In advance of the meeting, should you have feedback, please email me at cleone@rsd6.org by August 2, 2021.  Feedback will be compiled and shared with the Board of Education in this process.

Thank you,
